Red
Panda :
Red Panda is found in the forests of eastern Himalayas at an altitude
of 1500-4000 mtrs. It is a small cute looking animal with a bright
chestnut brown body, rounded head, pointed ears and bushy ringed
tail. This animal feeds mainly on bamboo and also eats insects,
fruits and tuberous roots.
At present there are 18 Red Pandas in the Zoo.
From 1994 to 1998 PNHZP has successfully arranged captive breeding
of Red Panda. This happens to be a unique achievement.
Snow
Leopard :
Snow Leopard or Ounce is a highly endangered wild animal of the
snow clad areas of the Himalayas. This natural hunter, preys mainly
on wild sheep, sheep, goats, rodents birds and other small animals.
Pale white colour, thick fur, bushy tail and smaller size differentiate
this species from the common leopards.
Presently, there are a total of 8 Snow Leopards out of which 4
are male and 4 are female.
Siberian Tiger :
Siberian Tiger is the largest race of tigers in the world found
in Ussuri region of Siberia. Compared to the Tnelina Tiger, the
Siberian /Ussuri Tiger is larger, paler in colour, thicker in
coat and has fluffy tail.
PNHZP Park is the only zoo in entire South East Asia to house
and breed the animal in captivity.
Tibetan Wolf :
The Himalayan Wolf is found at an altitude between 7000 and 13000
ft. above m.s.l. in the Western Himalayas. This carnivore preys
upon larger mammals to rodents, birds or even insects, crabs etc.
This wolf differs from common wolf by its thick blackish coat
and heavier built. The wolf is the ancestor of the domestic dog.
Their sight and hearing are good. They have powerful jaws and
vocal communication is well developed in them.
In 1990, a pair of wolves were received from Shimla Zoo. They
were brought there from Spiti Valley Himachal Pradesh. All these
wolves are the descendants of that original pair.
Markhor :
The wild goat of Western Himalayas, is easily recognised by its
magnificient work screw shaped horns. Of all the ungulates, the
Markhor is most skilled in climbing difficult and dangerous cliffs.
